Jesus was called “son of David” because he was descended from King David who had promised to return one day. As a man, he became the descendant of King David (Romans 1:3-4)

Davi lived for almost one thousand years before Jesus was born. When people called Jesus “son of David”, they meant “descendant”. Joseph, father of Jesus, was also called son of David by the same meaning (Matthew 1:1).

While he was on earth, Jesus was considered to be the son of Joseph. Because Joseph was descended from King David, Jesus also had the right to be recognized as a descendant of David.

Even the angel Gabriel acknowledged that, in terms of humans, Jesus was descended from David (Luke 1:31-35).

What does title “Davi’s Son” mean?

“The son of David was the Messiah, the Savior awaited by the Jews.” According to God’s promises made throughout the Old Testament, the Jews knew that their savior would be the one who saved them from the world.

God promised Abraham that through his descendants all people would be blessed; this promise was passed down to Isaac and Jacob (Isaac’s son).

Being descended directly from David, Jesus fulfilled all requirements for being Messiah. His identification as son of David was important proof that he was the promised Savior who everyone awaited.

Son or son of David?

Jesus put the Pharisees to test by asking them whether God could be both father and master of David.

The prophecies said he would be descended from David but David also prophesied that his servant would be lord of him. He did not have authority over his own son, so how could David be his servant? (Matthew 22:41-45)

Jesus asked this question because the Pharisees thought they knew God’s secrets but didn’t want to admit he was God.

Jesus showed them they didn’t know everything. The answer to the riddle was that Jesus was descended only from David in human terms. Jesus also existed before David was born and was greater than him.
