Embrace God’s Purpose Through Decisions and Surrender

Let us consider how our positions and decisions shape our lives and how, through surrender, we can transform pain into purpose, embracing new beginnings.

Your Position Influences Your Decisions

In Genesis 50, Joseph’s brothers find themselves in a precarious position after the death of their father, Jacob. They fear Joseph’s retribution for their past wrongs. Joseph, now in a position of power in Egypt, faces a significant decision: how will he respond to his brothers’ plea for mercy?

Our positions, whether in authority, influence, or suffering, shape our decisions. Joseph’s position as a leader in Egypt and as a beloved son of Jacob uniquely positioned him to either exact revenge or extend grace.

The Impact of Your Decisions

Joseph’s choice was profound. Instead of retaliation, he chose forgiveness and kindness. His decision impacted not only his family but also the course of history for the Israelites in Egypt. Likewise, our decisions have far-reaching consequences. Whether in our families, workplaces, or communities, the choices we make can build bridges or walls, heal wounds or deepen them.

A Chain of Events

Every decision sets off a chain of events. Joseph’s forgiveness led to the preservation of his family and ultimately the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham. It’s a reminder that our decisions can either align with God’s will, fostering growth and redemption, or oppose it, causing strife and division.

Within the Event, There’s a Decision

In every significant event, there is a moment of decision. Joseph’s brothers chose to seek forgiveness; Joseph chose to grant it. Similarly, we face moments where our choices determine the outcome of situations. Will we choose the path of Christ-like humility and grace?

You Have a Decision to Make

Philippians 2:5 urges us to have the same mindset as Christ Jesus. Jesus, in His divine nature, chose humility and obedience, even unto death. Today, each of us has a decision to make: will we emulate Christ in our humility, service, and love?

It Is Bad, But God Is Good

Joseph acknowledged the evil intentions of his brothers but declared God’s greater plan: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:20). Despite the bad, God’s goodness prevails. Our trials and tribulations are opportunities for God’s redemptive power to manifest.

What They Did Doesn’t Define Your Future

Joseph’s future was not defined by his brothers’ betrayal but by God’s purpose for his life. Similarly, what others do to us doesn’t determine our destiny. God’s plan for us transcends human actions. We are defined by His purpose and promise.

The Power of Surrender

True power lies in surrendering to God’s will. Joseph surrendered his pain, choosing God’s way over his own. Jesus surrendered His divine privileges, embracing humanity and the cross. Our power comes from letting go and letting God lead.

Think about your own life. “What others intended for harm, God intended for…” How would you finish that sentence? Reflect on the ways God has turned your trials into testimonies, your pain into purpose.

How To Tell If You’ve Surrendered

You can tell you’ve surrendered to God when your decisions reflect His love, grace, and forgiveness. When you release the need for control and trust in His plan, you embody Christ’s humility and servant-heartedness.

Turning Pain Into Purpose

Joseph’s pain was a pathway to God’s purpose. Our sufferings, when surrendered to God, become tools for His glory. Every trial can transform us, every hardship can be a stepping stone towards our divine calling.

A New Beginning

In Christ, every end is a new beginning. Joseph’s story ended not in revenge but in reconciliation. Jesus’ story ended not in death but in resurrection. Our stories, too, are continuously renewed in God’s love and grace.

Beloved, as we go forth today, let us remember that our positions influence our decisions, our decisions impact the world, and in every event, there’s a divine choice to be made. Surrender to God’s will, let His goodness redefine your future, and turn your pain into purpose. Embrace the new beginnings He offers, knowing that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

Amen.
