Douglass Boulevard Christian Church is involved in many ministries of justice and compassion. The church participates actively in the Highland Community Ministries (HCM) and partners with Habitat for Humanity to help provide housing for those in need. Housed at Douglass is the Highland Senior Center which meets daily from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals to those who can't get out on a regular basis. Douglass offers office space to the HCM Preschool Program. In addition, Douglass members volunteer regularly at the Wayside Christian Mission. Two Alcoholic's Anonymous groups meet weekly in Douglass' Briney Hall, and a Women's A/A group in the main church. Also, meeting regularly are a boy scout troop and a cub scout pack, both of which are chartered by the church. Douglass is very much a part of the Highlands Community and makes its facilities available for meetings and local events. One of the year's highlights is the 5K Run and Pancake Breakfast, an HCM fundraiser, which is part of the Week in the Highlands every fall. RECONCILIATION MINISTRY
What is the Reconciliation Mission?
Reconciliation is the special mission of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for the elimination of the primary causes of racism in North America.
The mission supports education and other actions or plans to empower members of the church and community to change racist policies and systems within North America and specifically the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ).
On January 12, 2002, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) In Kentucky Board approved a resolution to respond to the call of the General Church to work for the elimination of racism and for racial reconciliation in the church. In so doing, it acknowledged that:
*Racism is a spiritual and theological dilemma as well as a social evil.
*Racist practices exist throughout the life of the church and need to be addressed.
*The church needs to get its own “house” in order even as it looks toward being a transformational agent in the larger world.
*Racism is a systemic problem with historical root causes.
*Racism can be defined in many ways.
This initiative is based on an analysis of racism that understands racism to be a combination of racial prejudice and institutional and /or economic power. Such a move calls for a transformational process that will educate the regional body and congregations about systemic racism, discern the presence and nature of racism as sin, develop and model strategies to address and eradicate the root causes of racism, and work toward racial reconciliation. This will be accomplished by providing spiritual, programmatic and financial resources for congregations.
